Unconventional Countertops

Do you view the world through rose-colored glasses? Maybe you like to sing the body electric? You may march to the beat of your own drum, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in a home with elements of the everyday.

If you’re planning a bath or kitchen remodel, your countertop is going to be a significant part of that. The countertop says a lot about your personality, and it’s generally the element that draws the eye first when a person walks in.

For the eye-catchers, the dreamers, and the unconventional, there are countertop materials to fit your taste and mood. Here are some of our favorites.

Concetto

Available only from select retailers in the United States, Concetto is a unique composition that comes in a dazzling array of colors and patterns. The countertop is a blend of cut and fused semi-precious stones, creating remarkable designs. Though you may even see a petrified wood countertop, the most common Concetto materials are quartz, agate, and Jasper.

Concetto is low maintenance and is highly scratch and stain-resistant. The dramatic tones and details of this stone will make an unforgettable kitchen, bath, or vanity.

Vetrazzo

If you’re looking for a “green” solution to your home, a Vetrazzo countertop may meet your needs. The product is a unique composition of recycled glass and binders, with a finished product that looks almost like a mosaic. Vetrazzo countertops are at least 85% recycled glass, and each slab is unique. According to the manufacturers, the countertop itself is also recyclable. The process allows for unique color choices and variations, making it an excellent choice for a home that requires a special touch.

Onyx

Onyx is an excellent alternative to granite or marble and is formed in ancient caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Onyx features fascinating swirls and interesting pastels, and its use for horizontal surfaces is unconventional. The material, while beautiful and unique, also requires a bit of TLC, as it can etch and scratch easily. The result, however, is like nothing else.
