The Dark Side of Cabinet Hardware

 In blog, Cabinets Aurora

No, we’re not talking about the Force. One of the things in cabinets that are really hot right now is dark hardware. We’re talking bronzes and blacks and even brasses. You’ve probably heard of these descriptors, but if you want more detail, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s everything you need to know about dark cabinet hardware.

Brass Hardware

Brass is a common metallic alloy, meaning it is a combination of more than one type of metal. In this case, brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Brass is yellowish in color and can look almost gold, which is part of its appeal. In addition, brass has so many different finishes that create a broad spectrum of textures.

  • Polished – When you think of polished brass, think bright and shiny, not unlike some musical instruments. You won’t get a patina on this finish.
  • Satin – You’ll see a matte finish
  • Antique – Also known as weathered or rustic, the antique finish is a special treatment designed to make it look aged.

Bronze Hardware

Like brass, bronze is also an alloy. Unlike brass, bronze is a combination of copper and tin. Occasionally, bronze will also have iron or pewter mixed in to increase the material’s hardness. Bronze has a darker tone than brass and has an overall more brown color scheme. The finish can also partially dictate the final color.

  • Oil-rubbed – This finish is particularly hot currently. The result is an antiqued, dark appearance perfect for traditional kitchens.
  • Caramel – Accentuating the copper tones, caramel is warm and inviting.

Black Hardware

Black is not a metal, but it is an extremely popular choice for cabinet hardware. Solid black is popular, as are black finishes applied to other metals. You can find black hardware in a wide range of materials, including steel, wood, and aluminum. It looks great in a variety of kitchens and baths, and when paired with white cabinets, creates a timeless look.
