Take Care of Your Tile Floor
And it will take care of you. If you have a tile floor in your kitchen or bath, you have probably realized by now how useful it is to have. Usually, all you need to do is do a quick sweep, but tile does need a little bit more attention every now and again. Here are some tips for taking care of your tile floor so that it lasts a long time.
Tile may seem pretty sturdy, but it can actually scratch easily if you’re not careful. The best way to avoid things like scratches is to sweep the floor regularly. It’s surprising how much dust and debris can build up in just a short period. Be extra diligent getting into corners and edges.
It’s also good practice to mop the floor about once a week. Use a mild detergent mixed with warm water. However, if you have marble tiles, you’ll want to use a heavily diluted solution—marble can lose its shine when exposed to too much harsh detergent. Alternatively, you could create a mix of distilled vinegar and water to wipe away greasy areas. A vinegar solution is a great choice for glazed porcelain tiles. Again, that one isn’t safe for marble, as it can etch the surface.
It’s not glamorous, but grout needs to be cleaned, too. A paste made from baking soda and water is actually very effective. Simply brush it in with an old toothbrush and then rinse. If the stains are really tough, try vinegar and baking soda and let the paste sit for a few minutes.
If you do notice some scratches on the tiles, there are actually scratch removal kits you can purchase to help. However, if the tile has been scratched down to the white, there’s really no way to fix it, and you may want to consider replacing it.
