Questions to Ask Your Bathroom Contractor

 In Bathroom, blog

While there are certainly things that you can do yourself when you’re undertaking a bathroom remodel, in general it’s better to have some more experience and expertise on hand. A bathroom contractor can manage your project, and a good contractor can stick to your budget and time frame. After all, a bathroom remodel is no small undertaking—you want someone you trust to get the job done. Here’s what you need to ask a bathroom contractor before you actually start your project.

Training and Experience

One of the first things you’ll want to ask your contractor is how much experience they have in the bathroom remodeling industry. Ask about any training they may have and how many years they have been a contractor.

Legal Questions

A contractor is going to be in and out of your home daily, and there’s potential for damage. The contractor also needs to be well-versed in building codes and understand the legalities of the contract. Ask to find out if the contractor is licensed in your state and if they are insured. You want to make sure that the contractor is appropriately covered in case of an issue.

References

This is one step you cannot ignore. Ask the contractor for references, specifically for bathroom projects. References are a great way to independently verify how well the contractor works with other clients and if the job was completed to satisfaction. A good contractor will easily provide a list of references—if they don’t, that’s a big red flag and you should look elsewhere.

Contact references and ask about their level of satisfaction with the project. Was there much interference in the home? Did they respect your property? Ask if the job was completed in the expected time frame and if there were any expenses that were unexpected.

Permits

Find out who is responsible for obtaining permits—the contractor should be able to tell you what, if any, you’ll need.
