Kitchen Styles Part 2: Cottage Kitchens

 In blog, Kitchen

As part of our series on kitchen styles, we wanted to highlight a popular choice for kitchens: the cottage style. If you’re planning a kitchen remodel and you’re looking for something inviting, comfortable, and has a lived-in look, the cottage style may be the right one for you. Read on for details on how to achieve this look.

A Study in White

Cottage kitchens are known for white cabinets and white walls. While you don’t have to follow this “rule” exactly, a warm white will make the room feel bright, inviting, and full of light. If you want some color, think about very light blues or yellows to create your own style. If your kitchen has a lot of windows, the windows combined with light colors will make the space feel even bigger.

Textures

Part of what makes a cottage kitchen feel like home is the use of different textures to give the feeling of age. Think about textured subway tiles for the backsplash, and choose an interesting marble or granite to create even more texture.

Vintage Goods

A cottage kitchen is just begging for details. Put your own touch on the kitchen by including some of your favorite vintage finds. These add both personality and the feeling of a well-aged kitchen without actually being old. Think about bar stools, baskets, and other accessories like bread boxes.

Sinks

The sink is an important element in every kitchen, and it can become a standout item in a cottage kitchen. Drop-in sinks are easy to install and are readily available—you’ll want it in white, of course. Alternatively, you can go for a more vintage style and install an apron front sink. The apron sink extends down towards the cabinets and is visible from the front, creating an interesting detail.

Sometimes it’s the little things that stand out the most. Iron hardware, beaded boards, and molding can all create textures that draw the eye and add the finishing touches.
