Carpet vs. Hardwood Floors

 In blog, Flooring Aurora

When it comes to home remodeling, one of the biggest debates that comes up is flooring. Some people are committed to carpeting, while others are more in favor of hardwood floors. If you’re not sure which is right for you, keep reading to find out some of the pros and cons for each. There is no ‘right’ answer, but rather you’ll find what’s right for you and your home.

Cost

Hardwood floors are often associated with high-end luxury, and that’s partially because they are more expensive per square foot than carpeting. Carpet is usually the more affordable option for families, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best option for your home.

Cleaning

Hardwood floors are notoriously easy to clean. Do a quick sweep with a broom or a dry mop and suddenly the floor is as good as new. Carpets, on the other hand, absorb spills and stain easily, and dust can collect deep in the carpet fibers.

Safety

Do you have little kids running around the house? Carpet is padded and can provide a much nicer surface upon which to fall or play. Hardwood floors can cause more than a few bruises for kids that play hard.

Warmth

If you live in a place with colder winters, like Colorado, it’s important to consider your heating costs. Carpet is an insulator and keeps your house a little warmer overall than hardwood floors. Not to mention, nobody likes the harsh feeling of putting your bare feet on a cold, hard floor. Carpet provides a nice, inviting surface for your feet in cooler weather.

Longevity

Carpet eventually wears out. The threads start to wear and you may start to notice thins spots and stains. Hardwood floors also need some attention, but they can be refinished, allowing you to keep your flooring in place for decades. Not to mention, hardwood floors don’t really go out of style. Carpets may fall in and out of trend, but hardwood lasts forever.
