An Introduction to Bathroom Light Fixtures

 In Bathroom, blog

It doesn’t matter if you want to do a quick bathroom makeover or a more thorough remodel, new lighting fixtures can make a dramatic change in the look and feel of the space. Not sure where to start? We’ve put together a quick guide for the keys to bathroom lighting.

Common Light Fixtures

On the surface, it may seem like there are a lot of choices for fixtures, but we can actually narrow down light fixtures into just a few categories.

  • Pendant – A pendant light is suspended from the ceiling via a cord or chain and can act as a source of both ambient and task lighting in a bathroom. Pendant lights come in a wide variety of styles and colors and can even be used as an accent point in the bathroom. Hang multiple lights in front of the mirror for more consistent lighting.
  • Wall Sconce – These are great for accenting a mirror and are mounted directly to the wall. Aesthetically, it looks better to have more than one.
  • Vanity – Vanity lighting refers to multiple lights joined with a single base. These are very common in bathrooms and are widely available in many different styles so you can be sure you’ll find one to match your tastes.
  • Ceiling – Also common are ceiling lights, with are sometimes fixtures and sometimes recessed into the ceiling.

Bulb Types

For bathrooms, you generally want a good source of bright, cool light, which will make it easier to see what you’re doing while you’re shaving or putting on makeup. The most readily available bulbs are compact fluorescents (CFLs) and LEDs. LEDs cost more but last significantly longer than CFLs, leading to overall long-term savings.

Installation

While the intrepid do-it-yourselfer might be able to change a light fixture, there are circumstances where it might simply be better to leave it to the pros. If the fixture isn’t the same style, there may be additional electrical work required.
